Columbian Park Zoo, Savings and Zoo Park Description for 2024

Columbian Park Zoo houses over 190 animals from over 90 different species. It was founded in 1908 when it just contained foxes, skunks, pelicans, deer, lynx, prairie dogs, and a wolf. The zoo was then improved in 1928 when the main house was built and an elephant was added to the house. After a couple of years during the 30s, the zoo started breeding the animals with other animals with a few other small zoos after which they started housing lions, elk, zebras, monkeys, alligators, and bears.

Many years later, in 2004, the Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department started to create a plan for the zoo for major improvements which included more animal exhibits, a discovery center, as well as the return of the Columbia Park Carousel. After these improvements were outlined in the plan, they reopened the zoo in 2007. It currently holds zoo summer camps, zoo memberships, and zoo internships.
