Potawatomi Zoo, Savings and Zoo Park Description for 2024
The Potawatomi Zoo first started out as a duck pond in 1902 when it was actually called the South Bend Zoo. It then relocated to Wall Street in South Bend when it started housing a herd of deer. In 1917, it expanded and acquired some buffalo that were placed on Potawatomi Park. It expanded yet again in 1927 when it gained 10 acres of land. In 1949, a barn was made to keep domestic animals which still stands to this day and works as the petting zoo part of the zoo.
Currently, the zoo houses over 400 animals which include primates, Australian animals, and big cats. There are also events held here including a calendar of events, a yearly members picnic, and much more. This zoo brings in more than 200,000 visitors each and every year.
