Washington Park Zoo, Savings and Zoo Description for 2025


The Washington Park Zoo sits on 15 acres of land on a hilly sand dune near Lake Michigan. The zoo started out with one brown near in 1928 when the owner of the bear moved it to the park hoping it would get more people visiting it. Later on, the local fire department brought I more birds and animals while at the time, it only houses a few abandoned exotic animals. Bringing these extra animals in started making it officially a zoo.

The zoo currently holds more than 200 animals consisting of over 90 different species from around the world. Although there are currently Grizzly Bear and Bengal Tiger exhibits, the zoo is expanding to exhibit the animals in more natural surroundings which include botanical plants around them. It currently holds many calendar of events as well as different programs for everyone to enjoy including zoo experiences, educational resources for parents and teachers, and a kids corner.
