The Minnesota Zoo opened its doors in 1978 and is an accredited member of the Association of Zoo and Aquariums. The zoo has a mission to connect animals, humans, and the natural world together. The exhibits visitors will see will allow them to see many animals from around the world. This zoo has different events including camps, a calendar of events, an opportunity to allow for visitors to rent the zoo and host their own event, and ways to support the zoo by becoming a member, volunteering, and even donating to the zoo.

The zoo also offers "Friends of the Zoo". All Friends of the Minnesota Zoo donors receive all the benefits of membership for two adults residing at the same address and their dependent children and grandchildren 21 and under, PLUS they may bring two free guests with each visit
