Turtle Back Zoo is an animal care facility located in West Orange, New Jersey. It is part of the oldest country park system in the United States, the Essex Country Park System. The zoo houses more than 800 animals in a 20-acre land area. It has been an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) since 2006. It features animal exhibits including the golden mantled” flying foxes, the American black bear and a reptile house and education center. The facility offers a wide array of activities perfect for the whole family.

Special Events Pricing

  • Sea Turtle Sunrise Event (May 17, 2025): Special admission includes early morning access, one doughnut, one drink, and free train rides. Children under 3 admitted free (without doughnut).[1]
  • Turtle Back Hatchlings Program: $25 per child per class (ages 12-24 months). Includes admission for one caregiver. Zoo admission not included.[2]

Upcoming Programs (2025)

  • Turtle Back Hatchlings: Sessions available on June 15, July 13, and August 17, 2025 at 10am[2]
  • Sea Turtle Sunrise Event: May 17, 2025 (Rain date: May 18, 2025)[1]
